Essential Spelling Lists
These are the words are the most common for writing stories and need to be learned off by heart.
  • Practise 5 words three times per week.
  • Practise in order of the words. Don't skip any words, it is surprising what children can misspell when in the middle of writing.
  • Start at the list your child is up to.
Tips to make spelling fun, but even more importantly... stay in your child's longterm memory:
  • copy, hide, then try again. Try it with your eyes closed!
  • write words in chalk on the concrete.
  • writing words in different colours for each different sound e.g. but
  • create letter shapes with plastercine or pipe cleaners.
  • write the word in sentences.
  • type words in crazy fonts on the computer.

  • come up with your own practising ideas.
  • Practise your words three times per week e.g. Mon, Tue, Wed. Don't cram homework in on one night as you are less likely to retain the information in your longterm memory.
