Puppets

Next week we are learning about puppets with a view to making puppets that represent our family/whanau members and performing little shows for our peers. We are planning to make puppet theatres and your child may wish to bring items to school to create with. Shoe boxes or other similar sized boxes are suitable to experiment making puppet theatres with. I am encouraging them to bring items to school to decorate their theatres with if they would like to personalise them with items other than what we have at school.

If your child wishes to make a puppet with photos for the faces of their puppets, they may ask for a photo/photos that they can cut up and glue on to sticks to represent all the members of your family. It will be great fun!

Look at our products we made to sell for the fair!

Update on Spring Fair

Here is a copy of the update I posted on the Spring Fair page:

We have pretty much everything we need for Saturday. Thank you for your support. If you planned on sending something to class to help out - please send it anyway as it never hurts to have more! Thanks especially to the bakers.  We have enough bakers but if you were planning to bake but had not informed me, please let me know so I can help you out with ingredients. The stall roster is right down the bottom if you scroll down but I will copy it here. There are spots for more helpers as 2 people per hour is ideal and I will be at the stall the whole time. We are going to be next to the coffee cart at the front of the school outside Ara Huaanga - SO SUPER DUPER EXCITING!!!!!!Updated 28/10/2014

Roster:
11-12  Wagner          Christine
12-1    Vanessa         Cath
1-2      Sue-e
2-3     Hannah

Rice Jars

We finished our rice jars for the fair. The children each chose items that went inside and we made funnels to pour the coloured rice we wanted into our jars. You have to shake the jars to find all the items. We are calling them goggle jars.

Happy Diwali

More treats for Diwali, we are very lucky! Thanks Geeta for making those. Room 12 enjoyed them very much!

We heard all about Diwali fireworks - what an exciting time.

Spring Fair necklaces

Vanessa came in today and helped the children to make necklaces for the Spring Fair. The kids are thrilled with what they have made. Thanks for supporting our efforts for the fair, Vanessa!

We are making the rice jars this week and then all we need to do is have the baking done next week. Head over to the Spring Fair page in this blog for more details.

Laddu today!

Yum, it was delicious. Loving the Indian sweets. Thanks Priyanka!

Bucket Hat

Hats are Back! It's Term 4 and time for the hats to come back to school. Please send hats to school as part of your child's uniform.

Birthday Treats - There is no expectation that you send treats to school for special occasions. If you would like to, some cut up fruit is just as exciting as sweets and the brain break will help our learning. Thanks for your understanding.

The Pool is open after labour weekend and I should know before then the time we have for our swimming sessions. I will let you know as soon as I can.

Celebrate the Festival of Lights

It's been an amazing and colourful first week of school. This is Anushka in a sari that her Mum helped her to put on. I watched it and it's not easy to put on but well worth it. Our girls looked like princesses this week!

Sari

Diyas'

Ariana brought some in from home and shared them for news. They are pretty.

Indian Treats

Look what Nafisa brought in! Thank you Ameena for making these for us. I would like to show you pictures of the children enjoying these treats but I can't because they ate them so fast!!!

Hot rocks!

Today we made our rocks for the Spring Fair. The rocks were hot when they came from the oven - but they cool quite quickly- so we had to work fast to melt the crayons on to the rocks.

DIWALI!

It is Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Our Topic Studies are about the cultures we have in NZ. We are also learning about other countries and the lives that children live in those countries. As part of Social Studies we will look at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and giving the children knowledge about what is a need and what is a want will start to build understandings about rights and what they are.

Last weekend was the Auckland City Diwali celebrations and this weekend is the West Auckland Diwali celebration at the Trusts Stadium. Our children shared their news about what happened last week. Some of the girls wore or brought in their Salwar Kameez (so beautiful!!!).

We played with the coloured rice we made yesterday (not for Rangoli because we have to make our rice jars later). It was fun.

Nishita came in to show us a powerpoint. She told us about the 5 days of Diwali, And about the clothes (Ariana shared her clothes),

Nishita told us about  henna and Fabiola showed us her henna. Nishita taught us some dance moves. She showed us a video about the story of Ram and Sita.

Nishita was AMAZING! Thanks Nishita. We enjoyed it so much.

We are learning to sort information

Statistics is about sorting and displaying information so we can see it straight away. This is our bar graph that we made from our Venn diagram. We looked at the NEEDS circle and the 4 things we thought were most important and then we each chose the need that was the most important to each of us. In the upcoming weeks we will be discussing the reasons for our decisions and justifying our choices.

We worked out what was most important by coming up with a meaning or definition and then we used examples and talked about whether it was a need or want e.g. electricity. Pretty tricky but not for Room 12.

What Do These Words Mean?

In Writing today we looked at the meanings of these words and the children's understanding of what they could be. I'm pretty impressed Room 12.

Welcome Back to Term 4

What did we learn to today?

Our topic is called WE ARE WHO WE ARE and it is about how we express our cultures in our everyday lives such as in our family, school and community. We will also be looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and if you would like some more information please pop over to our topic page on the main website.

Today we looked at NEEDS and WANTS and the children discussed what these terms meant and then we sorted pictures into needs and wants on a VENN diagram on the floor.

First we decided what these words could mean:
It was wonderful to see that the children already had clear ideas about what these terms meant.

Then we had a go at sorting words into NEEDS and WANTS in our Venn diagram on the floor:

We had to have a good discussion about whether some things were really needs and we moved some pictures around after voting on them.

This is what we came up with:

NEEDS:

WANTS:

NEEDS AND WANTS
OUR VENN DIAGRAM LOOKS LIKE THIS:
WE WILL SEE IF OUR UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT OUR NEEDS AND WANTS ARE CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE TERM.

Spring Fair update

  • Cupcakes -We have a few gluten free cupcake recipes now so I can let you know which recipe to use and what ingredients we may need.
  • Allens lollipops and chupachups. If you'd like to donate you can bring in a packet once the term starts.
  • Rice Jars. If you are 'spring cleaning' bring any little toys, knick knacks and bits and pieces to school for the rice jar game.
Everything else we have the materials for. We just need to do the making!

The stall goes for 4 hours. When it is a little closer to the date, I will ask for any volunteers to help man the stall. I'm counting on Room 12 to do the sand game.

Bike Scoot Skate or Walk Performance and Video Premiere

The children performed amazingly on Friday which made all the practice well worthwhile. I have uploaded the youtube link for the video which we showed. We performed at the same time. We also videoed the performance, we are just trying to get it uploaded. Thanks Amirah and Josh C for your extra acting on the day. Well done Room 12 for your lovely loud singing and nice actions. I'm sure everyone was impressed with your hard work.

Litter Free Lunchboxes

Well done Room 12 for using those litter free lunchboxes. It means less waste going to landfill!
